This paper compares the compliment response behavior of native Chinese speakers, with that of native American English speakers, to see whether it supports Brown and Levinson's universal politeness thesis. Whilst the speakers seem to share some general politeness concepts and dimensions, their different strategies refer to the important role of culture in speech act performance.
