An examination of (i) simplified registers such as baby talk and foreigner talk, (ii) broken language and early child language, and (iii) the interaction between (i) and (ii) which may give rise to special varieties of language such as pidgins. Special reference is made to 'foreigner German', 'broken German', and 'Gastarbeiterdeutsch'.
