This paper argues that the concept of 'autoglottic space' provides a better explanation than the 'romantic' view of how writing restructures thought. It also emphasizes that the introduction of writing into particular cultures cannot be decontextualized from the social and political circumstances, nor from the diverse purposes which writing may serve.
