This paper proposes a unified analysis for some interesting uses of quotation marks, including so-called scare quotes. It is argued that scare quotes and other similar instances are related to some important themes in the study of natural languages, such as cases concerning alleged devices of conventional implicature and of so-called metalinguistic negation, and, more generally, problems regarding the distinction between semantic and pragmatic domains of inquiry.
