Annotation

This study integrates the research looking at toilet graffiti into the social identity and deindividuation approach and into communication accommodation theory. The findings show strong gender differences for topic, and more subtle gender differences in language style. In the mixed-gender context, gendered language appears to be mitigated and topics form a composite of the topics found in the men's and women's toilets, yet they also contain the only sexist remarks in the data.
