Annotation
This "natural experiment" on political equivocation compares the language of five well-known Italian politicians, taken from television interviews, with the language of five different politicians in courtroom examinations. Differences are found between legal and political contexts regarding the distribution of questions, answers, and their associations. The findings are then discussed in terms of a "situational" theory of political equivocation combined with a "contextual" explanation.
