This study examines language choice among multilingual Bengali women in Malaysia and the connections between their code choices and identity. The data suggest that older linguistic theories concerning the effects of social networks on language behavior cannot account for the structure and behavior of newer immigrant groups in present-day non-Western communities. The studied community appears to be unique, as the women’s marriage choices are responsible for both language loss and language maintenance.
