It is argued that the traditional Czech historical and nationalistic attitudes are receding, that the system of attitudes and the value hierarchy undergo a process of reconstruction, and that norm awareness diminishes. Three main motive powers of this movement are identified: the specific Czech diglossia; a continuous process of detailed functional differentiation; and a massive influence of foreign languages, in particular English.
