Focusing on Tunisia, this paper shows the adequacy of Ferguson’s (1959) account of diglossia. It explores the changing demographics of Tunisians’ access to the high Arabic variety; the complex ways in which Tunisians deal with the “communicative tensions” created by diglossia; and the changing nature of Arabic in a "postdiglossic" Tunisia.
