This paper explores two phenomena of linguistic change occurring in the descriptive and in the conditional Spanish discourse of the Mexican-American community of the United States, and the role played by the contact language in these processes of change. The acceleration of the two changes in the bilingual community seems to result from processes of linguistic simplification.
