This paper discusses the link between the literal meaning and the pragmatic functions of the Japanese formulaic expression 'yoroshiku onegaishimasu', (literally meaning 'I make a request and I hope things go well’) in naturalistic data. This reveals a Japanese culture-specific ‘face’ very sensitive to debt.
