This paper demonstrates that variations in a Holocaust narrator's line 'we knew that's it' (Labov, 1972), a paradigmatic way of conveying a turning point in a narrative of danger, reveal its relationship with the narrative's changing structure and with the shift toward multi-vocalic ways of external evaluation.
