Annotation

A programmatic paper, with the purpose (i) to sketch a workable notion of linguistic pragmatics, and to formulate a distinction between 'large' and 'small' differences in the pragmatic practices of different linguistic communities; and (ii) to illustrate methods of discovering and describing some of the item-by-item kinds of pragmatic knowledge, in particular those related to formulaic expressions in English and pragmatic particles in German.
