This paper uses relevance theory to offer a more precise pragmatic basis for a number of fairly recent linguistic accounts of how a communicator can use intonation to express a certain pragmatic meaning, viz. the meaning related to the speaker's manipulation of his/her message with regard to background of the addressee.
