Annotation

This paper deals with a sequence of two verb forms -kuwa 'be' + verb- in Swahili. Kuwa is argued to supply deictic orientation for verbs whose orientation is not obvious from context. Restrictions on permissible tense combinations in kuwa + V sequences are explained from a semantic/pragmatic perspective.
