Annotation

This paper discusses the 'circle' model for English worldwide originally promoted by Braj Kachru. It is argued that the model fails to capture transplantations of the language in locations not formally recorded by colonial history, that it ignores variation within locales, and that it encourages broad-brush descriptions of manifestations of English that do not stand up to sociolinguistic analysis.
