Annotation

This article discusses the introduction of critical language awareness in student teacher classrooms at the Johannesburg College of Education in a climate of social change, that is in the period immediately before and after the first democratic election in 1994 in South Africa. A discourse analysis of student teachers' journals helps to describe and explain contests over meaning, some of which involve issues concerning new teaching practices, social identities and fear of change.
