Annotation

This article examines the similarities and differences between Anna Wierzbicka's "natural semantic metalanguage" and the linguistic theory of Benjamin Lee Whorf. Issues considered include the meaning of linguistic relativity, the nature of conceptual universals, the importance of polysemy, and the scale and locus of semantic variation between languages. Examples are drawn mainly from English, Russian, and Hopi.
