An analysis of the complex speech act pattern of insisting. After a critical discussion of the usual conversational analysis approach to the description of speech acts, a new approach to speech act sequences is developed and applied to insisting. A number of subtypes of this pattern are distinguished and linguistically analyzed. Finally it is shown how the approach developed in this study can be applied to the description of dialogues.
