An attempt to formulate conversational principles to account for hedged performatives (i.e. sentences like 'I can promise you that we will be there on time' and 'I must advise you to remain quiet' in which a performative verb is combined with a modal or semi-modal). The paper also contains a taxonomy of illocutionary acts.
