Annotation
This paper tests Brown and Levinson's claim that power, distance and intrinsic extremity determine politeness levels, for the dyadic discourse of Shakespeare's four major tragedies. The results for distance are not those predicted by theory, as the components of affect and interactive closeness are not firmly associated in these plays.
