This book examines immigrants' language shift and maintenance in Australia, asking the novel question how the fact that an immigrant's first language is a dialect rather than the standard, influences language maintenance. It thus compares the language maintenance of post-World War II immigrants to Melbourne from the Limburg province of the Netherlands and from the German Württemberg area, two areas with quite different relations between standard and dialect.
