Annotation

This paper examines the efforts of Puerto Rican leaders and educators to defend the teaching of Spanish, as necessary to Puerto Rican national identity, against the imposed United States' strategy, forwarding English as the only official language of legal and educational systems. Those efforts are analyzed as rhetorical movements and linked to four historical periods between 1898 and 1950.
