The essays in this volume provide a multidisciplinary approach to the study of literacy in a sociocognitive context. Four recurrent themes are: the relationship between oral and literate language and its effects on intellectual and social functioning; the sociocultural shaping of linguistic, literature and cognitive behaviors; historical and metacognitive issues in bilingualism and biliteracy; and innovative perspectives on classroom literacy instructions.
