Annotation

This article investigates non-canonical word order in spontaneous Japanese discourse, dividing the exceptions into two types, i.e. with or without an intonation break between the predicate and the following element(s). The second type is divided into a discourse-pragmatic and an emotive subtype, the distributional and intonational features of which point to the grammaticization of the deviant word order.
