This paper deals with language contact, language conflict and language maintenance in multilingual areas. The description of the contact linguistic background in three 'Old Belgian' areas suggests the importance of an ecological approach in the analysis of linguistic contact areas in which one or more of the languages or varieties involved are threatened by extinction.
