This paper discusses the incommensurate notions of 'meaning' in the tradition culminating in Searle's philosophy of language and in the alternative tradition as manifested in the CMMM ('Coordinated management of meaning')-project, including the American pragmatists, Bateson and the later Wittgenstein.
