Four senses of the word 'say' are distinguished, Austin's (1962: 'How to do things with words') confusion about locutionary acts is discussed, his view that the 'primary' truth-vehicles are locutions and locutionary acts is criticized, and the correctness of the locutionary-illocutionary distinction is reaffirmed.
