This study investigates various semiotic processes involved in the 'simplification' of Sanskrit, viz. its transformation into a 'popular' language. In particular it discusses the regularization and transformation of Sanskrit into a language that structurally resembles modern Indian vernaculars and addresses the question of what simple Sanskrit represents.
