Annotation

The social roles of participants are said to form a crucial part of the context which disambiguates utterances (which are ambiguous because of the lack of correspondence between linguistic form and illocutionary force). It is shown that questions, with their requirement for specific responses, carry status implications which closely tie usage to social role. G. illustrates these ideas by considering the actual use of the syntactic question form in an African tribal society.
