This study considers active metaphorizing as a culture-specific speech practice which needs to be accounted for within an ethnopragmatic perspective. It contrasts an ethnopragmatic 'cultural' script for active metaphorizing in English with ethnopragmatic case studies of Pitjantjatjara and Malay. The natural semantic metalanguage theory is used as analytical framework.
