This paper applies Kreckel's (1981) distinction between common and shared knowledge to Japanese conversational interaction. Notwithstanding a strong core of common knowledge, misinterpretations seem to occur with some frequency in normal Japanese conversational interactions. Two general forms of misinterpretation are identified and discussed.
