Annotation

This article discusses two types of shared knowledge, the world and the metalinguistic type, in the light of psycholinguistic research in ambiguity detection and resolution. To exemplify the series of individual differences in ‘shared knowledge’ of the metalinguistic type, the paper discusses the role of individual differences in ambiguity detection and resolution in English and Japanese.
