Annotation

This analysis of dialect use among pupils in metropolitan Tokyo, demonstrates that 'new' dialect forms are chiefly used by active pupils, whilst unserious pupils are inclined to employ older, ‘incorrect’ words and pupils with leadership seem to prefer standard Japanese forms. As the new dialect forms are considered as a form of language change from below, they are found to possess universal value in sociolinguistic research on language change.
