Annotation

This paper on personation in Irish-language discourse, argues that personation, as a semiotic practice, motivates Irish-speakers to resist several attempts, centered in discourses of nation and state, to manipulate the Irish language as the "voice" of a generalized and purified national past or as a semiotically transparent state medium.
