This paper proposes a more restrictive definition of 'idiom' in the form of a test that divides Multi Word Units into ‘core idioms’, ‘figuratives’, and ‘ONCEs’. The more narrowly defined ‘core idioms’ appear to be the most difficult set of MWUs for learners and are thus the motivation for redefining idioms.
