This paper critically investigates some aspects of study into communication strategies, with special reference to Paribakht's article, published in Applied Linguistics (Vol. 6 No. 2), and deals with the difference between communication strategies used to communicate a problem meaning and strategies used to communicate a problem. Paribakht's approach appears to give data on a rather artificial form of the latter.
