This paper examines intertextual relations in public discourse as a form of mediation, applying the notion of ‘intertextual chains’ to an environmental debate on air pollution risks in Britain. Causality, a strongly contested type of meaning, is chosen for detailed analysis. It is argued that intertextual chains do not constitute a neutral form of mediation, in the sense of simply functioning as channels of transmission.
