This paper argues that one has to distinguish between two structurally distinct subtypes of ‘Distancing indirect speech or thought’, i.e. ‘representational’ and ‘scopal’ DIST. They are discussed as they display themselves in different registers such as academic discourse, news reports, literary texts), and they are associated with distinct contextual usage types.
