This paper, wich employs the framework of interactional sociolinguistics to relate theoretical work on cultural ethos and studies in crosscultural pragmatics with the interpretation of situated language use, points to three important interrelated aspects of conversational style in initial American-German crosscultural encounters, in order to offer teachers of English and German as second languages conceptual frameworks for and ideas about classroom practice.
