This study, based on interviews with rural women recruited from four Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) clinics in southeastern Iowa, distinguishes two discourses offering opposing normative guidelines for talk about drinking and pregnancy: the discourse of individualism and the discourse of responsible motherhood.
