This article examines speech rate in two standard national varieties of Dutch, drawing on conversations with native speakers, belonging to four different regions in the Netherlands and in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. The findings show a significant effect of the speakers' country of origin -subjects in the Netherlands speak faster than Belgian subjects-, and significant effects of the variables of gender and age.
