As the Australian experience with Italian, Greek and Chinese learners casts serious doubt on the usefulness of the distinction between 'native' and 'non-native' competence, this article discusses some difficulties with the distinctions between the terms 'native' and 'non-native' speaker, 'foreign' and 'second' language learners, and the related problem of choosing valid and reliable data about language background.
