Report on an ethnographic study which seeks to provide insights into the social and linguistic causes of language shift by means of an intensive analysis of communication in face-to-face groups. Language shift is said to reflect basic changes in the structure of interpersonal relations rather than mere alternations in the extralinguistic environment.
