Annotation

This paper argues that language education efforts in the developing world and economic development should go hand in hand. Three development settings in Bangladesh, Egypt, and Latin America are reviewed, which show that one has to give responsibility for development to the beneficiaries themselves, in particular women. The importance of literacy in this process is underlined.
