Annotation

This essay is based on the view that consciousness plays a pervasive role in the shaping of language. Although both the content and the flow of consciousness may be in part unconsciously determined, and although the use of language may depend considerably on unconscious mental structures and processes, at the same time consciousness will be assumed here to be the place where remembering, imagining, evaluating, and speaking come together to produce both thought and language.
