This essay deals with deixis. Definitional restictions on the infinite expansion of the class of deictics, allow to arrive at the more or less closed functional categories of person, space, time, discourse and social deixis. Focusing on spatial deictics, the current discussion challenges the idea of a unified category of spatial deictics.
