This essay deals with the work of G. Bateson (1904-1980). In the course of his research on communication, Bateson was above all interested in pragmatics. But here the word ‘pragmat­ics’ is to be understood in a very large sense, concerning not only the use of language by humans, but also animal communication and the creation of forms and order in nature as well as in social systems.
