This essay deals with irony in the sense of verbal irony or sarcasm. Little will be said on situational irony and nothing on cynicism. The classical 'pragmatic' view of irony has been challenged by relevance theory. Besides irony definitions, irony comprehension and functions are dealt with as well as irony processing in partial implementation.
