Annotation

Like any kind of indirect speech act, irony is said to operate on a specific convention of insincere language use. A foreigner has considerable handicaps in recognizing and utilizing unlikeliness in context, prosodic signals and other criteria for irony, which causes both the foreigner and his native partner a lot of communicative trouble but which offers the linguist a good insight into speech act patterning rules.
